Position: HVAC Technician
Classification: Classified
Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent; five years of experience directly related to HVAC & refrigeration system installation and repair.
Preferred Qualifications: Associate Degree or technical school training in HVAC Systems
Term of Employment: 12 Months, Full-Time
Salary/Grade: NC08 ($2,982 - $5,754)
Location: Maintenance Department
Reports To: Director of Maintenance
POSITION PURPOSE
Lead work associated with heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems Performs master craftsman level work associated with refrigeration equipment, including coolers, freezers, and related systems.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Considerable knowledge of HVAC systems, refrigeration systems, and equipment and fixtures;
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel; Working knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards;
- Effective oral and written communication skills;
- Critical thinking and problem solving skills;
- Ability to work independently and part of a team and complete tasks in the absence of clear direction;
- Ability to perform arithmetic calculations;
- Ability to troubleshoot and perform maintenance and repairs on HVAC systems; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school system staff, contractors, vendors, and external agencies
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
- Hold a valid HVAC and Refrigeration License determined by the North Carolina Board of HVAC Examiners; or hold an HVAC technician license determined by the North Carolina Board of HVAC Examiners.
- Must hold and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license according to the State of NC requirements.
- Within twelve months of employment, complete safety training according to OSHA standards.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Evening and weekend requirements for on-call emergencies may occur.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs experienced or master craftsman level work associated with HVAC systems, materials, equipment and fixtures.
- Responds to assigned work orders relating to HVAC; troubleshoots appropriate corrective measures and performs work to provide a solution.
- Replaces faulty or defective HVAC equipment and systems.
- Prepares and maintains records, work logs, and reports, as needed.
- Adheres to laws, regulations and requirements set forth in the WCPSS Safety procedures/policies.
- Maintains compliance and adherence to all safety procedures, occupational health practices, and maintaining a safe work environment.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT
Must be able to use a variety of equipment such as computers, hand/power tools, etc. Must be able to communicate effectively. The work requires the ability to operate automotive equipment. Continually requires the ability to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects up to seventy-five pounds. Due to the amount of time spent standing and/or walking, physical requirements are consistent with those for heavy work.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Must be able to work in an indoor and outdoor environment and come into direct contact with school system staff, contractors, vendors, external agencies. Frequent exposure to hazardous materials, gases, and chemicals, moving parts, and inclement weather conditions.
